Roadside Emergency Tips – Out of Gas

OH NO, THE CAR WON’T GO

So when driving down the road, the car cuts off, a quick look at the gas gauge shows that the needle is buddying up with the “E” peg. Not a good sight to see.

Never a good thing to happen but there are a few things that one can do to keep the situation from turning into a worse situation. Here are a few safety tips to follow if the vehicle ever runs out of gas.

GET TO THE SHOULDER IF ABLE

First things first, try and get to the shoulder of the road as safely as possible. If you are not able to get to the shoulder, turn your hazard lights on and call 911. Let them know that you are stuck in the middle of the roadway. They can come and help block traffic to get your car off of the road. Turning on your hazard lights will bring to the attention of other drivers the presence of a disabled vehicle earlier than just coming up on it. This helps decrease the chance of something happening keeping you and the passengers safe.

STAY IN THE CAR

Especially if you are on the freeway, do not chance getting out of the car and walking to the nearest gas station. Use a lifeline and call a friend. It’s not worth taking the risk. There are too many things that can go wrong from distracted drivers and unfortunately, drivers under the influence. Calling a friend is the best bet.

If not on the freeway and it is late at night, be safe and take advantage of that lifeline again and call a friend. This way, someone knows where you are and what the situation is. They can come to the rescue if they are able. The main important thing here is to let someone know what is going on and your location.
